A super over is played when a match ends in a tie. If a super over also ends in a tie it will be followed by another super over. Previously, the winner was typically decided by the number of boundaries scored throughout the match. This rule was changed after they got a huge criticism after the 2019 Cricket World Cup Final.
On 18 October, 2020 (Sunday) double header match was played and both the game was super thriller match to watch. It was the day when 3 super overs were played in the history of Indian Premier League. The first game of the double header match was between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders. The match tied and went to the super over and Kolkata Knight Riders won the super over.
The second match of sunday's double header match was between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians. This match also went to the super over as the score of both the team tied. In this match, audience saw not one but total of two super overs in a single match and three super over in a single day. This day made the history in Indian Premier League as three super over was played in a single day. 35th and 36th match of IPL 2020 was the best match of the season and best day for the IPL fans as well.
First Match Between Sunriser Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders
The match was started at 3:30 on 18 Oct,2020. Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and elected to bowl. KKR batted first and gave a decent target of 164/5.
Sunrisers Hyderabad Came to bat and lost the top order batsman early in the game. Warner scored a brilliant 47 of 33 balls and drove his team to the winning road. In the last over SRH needed 18 runs to win, Rashid Khan a new batsman came into bat and was in the strike. The first ball of the 20th over bowled no ball by Andre Russell, the match was going into the pocket of SRH but suddenly game turned upside down and match went to the favour of KKR and match tied.
In the super over Warner and Bairstow Came to bat and Lockie Ferguson was the bowler.
Ferguson did a brilliant job by dismissing Warner in the very first ball. In the 3rd ball he dismissed Abdul Samad and SRH could score only 2 runs. Sunrisers Hyderabad gave a traget of 3 in the super over. Kolkata won the super over easily.
Second match of the double header game on sunday was between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians
The match was started at 7:30 pm on 18 oct. Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat first and gave a decent target of 176/5 in 20 overs. Kings XI Punjab came to bat and started a good inning although they lost one of the opener Mayank Agarwal in 4th over. Captain of the KL Rahul scored a brilliant half century and continued his inning. KL Rahul was standing strong at one side of the crease and wickets was falling from other side despite of this Kings XI was heading towards the victory. Captain was leading the team from the front, he was only hope for the team victory as he was a set batsman but in the 18th over bumrah bowled out KL Rahul and cteated a hope for Mumbai Indians. Kings XI ended up leveling the score and the match went to the super over. Mumbai Indians were so happy as they got another chance to comeback in the match.
1st Super Over Between KXIP and MI
KL Rahul and Pooran came to bat from Kings XI. Jasprit bumrah was the bowler and being the best bowler and best choice for super over he conceded only 6 runs in super over and did his job done. Mumbai Indians was so confident about their victory but their happiness turned into sadness as Shami stole their hope and again the match was tied. Shami was the man of the moment as he didn't let Mumbai batsman to score 6 runs in 6 balls.
Match went to 2nd super over and this time Mumbai has to bat.
Note:- Rule says if a super over is followed by another super over then the bowler and batsman who batted and bowled in the first super over will not be allowed to bat or ball in the 2nd super over.
2nd Super Over Between KXIP and MI
Pollard and Hardik Pandya came to bat from Mumbai Indians and the bowler was Chris Jordan.
Mayank's Boundary save on the last ball of the over was out of this world and due to this Mumbai could get to the score of 11 runs.
Now Kings XI needs 12 runs to win. The Universe Boss came to bat along with Mayank Agarwal and the bowler was Trent boult. Gayle hitted the ball out of the ground in the very first ball for a six and then Mayank scored two consecutive boundary along the ground and won the historical match for Kings XI punjab.
